ADVICE TIME - Videographer

This topic comes up a lot because its so relevant to our day to day online use. But do you need to have it for your big day? Here are my thoughts…

Nay…

  • This is likely to be the same cost as your photographer.

  • This is another person to feed (although only a supplier meal).

  • Another decision to make so you get the right style and personality.

  • Can’t display in your house.

Yay…

  • A wonderful way of capturing the voices, smiles and laughs of those who won’t be around forever (sad but true).

  • A fun way to reminisce as a couple or with others.

  • Most likely a beautiful way to capture the atmosphere of the day.

  • An engaging way to show the events of the day.

Now, there are options to think about too.

These days a lot of photographers offer video as part of their booking. This could be a very low key, super short version so they don’t involve another supplier. This is a good choice if you are short on budget but wish to get the elements you might not remember like speeches (or even vows!).

It could be that they work alongside a Videographer that they think they work well with or matches in style to the images they create. This is double the cost but the photographer will handle the organisation of that addition.

If you decide to just ask guests to help with this part, you need to make sure they aren’t bias with their footage (one side of the family / friends), that they do a test run for important parts (especially for sound quality), and set up how to share this with you afterwards.

If you go with the videographer option, ask about:

  • How will you get the copy afterwards?

  • Do you get to choose the background music?

  • Can you see anything they have created in a similar venue before?

  • Do they offer any extras like mini guest interviews?

As usual you need to ensure these suppliers give you dietary requirements for their supplier meal and deadlines for when you’ll see either the sample or full edit. You’ll need to provide key info about important guests and moments on the timeline. If you are giving a list of what to capture, keep it small! Think ‘which images will we actually want to display or share?’.

Personally speaking, I wish I had got a professional for my own wedding as I’d love to see some footage of close family who have since passed away.

Anyway, I hope that gives you a good heads up on this lovely choice. There are some fab suppliers on our list too if you want to check them out!

Happy planning!
